Text Box: Recently myself and several of the Lodge members attended The Recovery Conference in Lansing, Michigan.  When we arrived we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast and refreshments and thought about which work shops we would attend. We all went to different workshops before lunch. After lunch we listened to Dan Fisher’s workshop which was titled “The Recovery Train.” I found it interesting that Mr. Fisher alluded to the fact that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia 21 years ago. Mr. Fisher reintegrated himself by becoming a psychiatrist. He went through medical school and earned a masters degree in biochemistry.

Mr. Fisher stated that as a psychiatrist he does sometimes prescribe medication but he said that it is about fifth on his list of treatments. He thought schizophrenia is mainly a social disease and that empathy, social supports, people believing in you and acceptance of your symptoms are more important. Mr. Fisher stated that in America, people have been taught to view schizophrenia as a life long sentence without the chance of  recovery. He stated that in other cultures people are encouraged to remove themselves from every day life in order to sort things out before returning to every day life or reintegrating themselves. Mr. Fisher challenges this form of treatment even with other psychiatrists. He says to others, “Either get on the Recovery Train or don’t.”

After listening to this brilliant and sometimes cool psychiatrist or (consumer in a suit) as he sometimes called himself, we left and headed back home feeling better about ourselves.                          Jon N.

Text Box: I would like to talk to you about a woman named Paula. Paula loved animals and enjoyed working at a doggy day care named Yuppy Puppy. Working here always put a smile on her face. Like most of us, Paula didn’t always look forward to another day of work, but the animals always seemed to make things better. Paula loved to visit her brother on the weekend and play with her nephew. I think her nephew brought out the kid inside of her which is not a bad thing for us adults to experience every once in a while. Paula had other friends in the program that she visited often and they would have a good time going to lunch or shopping. Paula was not the kind of person who went out a lot and but she enjoyed being at her apartment watching old movies on cable. Paula loved movies and went often before she started working. We would munch on popcorn and she would laugh like you never heard. If you were close to Paula she would allow herself to have a good time around you. Paula had her ups and downs like most people do who are trying to improve themselves in life but she never gave up. She had seen the worst but was now paying her bills, living in her own apartment, working and driving her own car.
We lost Paula recently and although her passing has brought sorrow and we continue to mourn and miss her, we will always take comfort in our memories of her. I just wanted you to know a little about her and that she was loved and will always be a part of the D & M community.
Text Box: Premier and Kinsel Lodge members are remaining busy with their business as well as the maintenance on their homes. Although empty beds at Premier Lodge are a concern, the current members remain hopeful that they will be filled soon.

Recently, the staff and members put on their working clothes and got down and dirty to spruce up Premier’s yard for the summer. Fresh flowers and some new lighting was added to the yard. It will also be entered into the “Best Yard Contest.” We will soon be scheduling a yard day to freshen up Kinsel Lodge. Everyone here at the lodges would like to wish all of you a, “Fun in the sun, safe summer!”

Text Box: Summer 2004

Text Box: The consumer action group  (CAG) was formed this year to promote self-advocacy for consumers in the D & M Consultants lodge and apartment programs. The mission and purpose of this group is to spread the word, educate, support and keep current about the mental health issues they are faced with. Three consumers, Lori F., Mark A. and John R. have volunteered to be part of this group with a staff person to serve as a consultant. We had our first breakfast meeting in April and plan to have them on a quarterly basis.

During the first meeting we set up a chairperson, John R. and a secretary, Lori F. Some of the topics discussed were: 1) Have an open house to inform the public about mental illness, 2) Make sure people are registered to vote, 3) Put information into D & M Consultants newsletter, 4) Encourage people to write letters to legislators, 5) Invite guest speakers to talk with consumers and 6) Do presentations to parent groups. The group will put these ideas into action and take an active role in issues that involve their mental health.

Text Box: PREP FOR CARF
Text Box: Can you believe it has been almost three years since D & M Consultants, Inc. had their first CARF (Certification and Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) survey? This August D & M Consultants is scheduled for their second survey.

D & M Consultants was very pleased with the results of the last survey and hopes that this year we will be pleased again. In preparation for the CARF survey, the staff at D & M Consultants is reviewing the current year standards to make sure we are addressing any changes made from the previous year. This does take sometime but we feel it is important that we adhere to the standards, as they are a guide to providing the best services possible.
Text Box: Summer has returned and the consumers and staff of D & M Consultants are back to work in the park they adopted in Southfield, Michigan. After a long winter, Bauervic Park needed a facelift. It didn’t take long for the group to get the park looking fresh and ready for the summer. It has been almost a year since we first adopted this park and keeping it clean for the community will be a continuing project this summer.

About every three weeks a different group will go out to clean the park. Anybody is always welcomed to chip in even if it’s not your turn to go.

This experience has allowed the consumers of D & M Consultants to give back something to the community they live in. They have even incorporated our walking club into the mix by taking a quiet, peaceful walk through the woods every time they clean the park. Your continued efforts are appreciated!!

Text Box: MICHIGAN IAPSRS CONFERENCE
Text Box: Here at D & M Consultants we are always looking for ways to deliver quality services to the consumers that we work with. One way is through workshops. In June, I will do a workshop on following dietary guidelines and making healthy food choices. My intention is to promote good health through making healthy food choices.
I will also be doing a workshop on low cost activities with the intention to introduce activities that are fun and low cost, in and around their community.  I am also preparing a list of public transportation methods in their areas.
                                                Rodney H.
Text Box: In March, Jim H. conducted a work shop focusing on consumer budgeting as it directly relates to their food and grocery expenditures. Most of the focus was on techniques that could be easily utilized to help everyone save money and cut back on waste. Although the apartment consumers only buy for themselves, it was of benefit to them as well. One of the biggest concerns was the waste of food. Too often leftovers were not being used. One suggestion was to have a day designated for leftovers and that has been implemented in the Lodges. Consumers should look for coupons and sales, check current inventory, make a list and shop according to the list. Jim will have a follow up workshop to check the progress in the Fall.

Text Box: D & M Consultants Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Committee, which consists of consumers, staff and parent representatives, meet semi-annually to review D & M’s CQI Plan,  Outcome Assessment Management Report, Safety Reports and the Incident Report Analysis. At the last meting on April 5, 2004, the committee made some recommendations. These included to increase marketing to fill empty beds, update the D & M brochure, have the medication monitor do medication checks more than once a day and to maintain D & M’s workshop/educational trainings. The committee will meet again in October 2004.
Text Box: On May 23, 2004 hundreds of individuals gathered on Belle Isle for the first NAMI-Walks  for the minds of America. It was a morning of uncertainty, the night before had left people with power outages, flooding and very little sleep due to the thunderstorms. But on the morning of the walk, the rain stopped, the sun came out and the event was successful. D  & M Consultants, Inc. had seven individuals attend the event. They raised over one hundred dollars for this first time ever fund-raising and mental health awareness event.
Our group stayed to the back and it was an awesome sight to watch the stream of individuals curving along Belle Isle, all wearing their white NAMI Walks T-shirts. It was a moment of hope, a sense of unity. May 23 has been declared NAMI-Walks Day by the Michigan Legislature.

Text Box: It’s time to plan the big summer outing and everyone has turned in some suggestions. A big summer picnic was one idea, to be held at either Stoney Creek or Kensington Metro Beach. Both have a swimming area, bike trails and good picnic areas. Cedar Point, Frankenmuth and Sea World were some other ideas.

Every month the recreation committee gets together to plan our monthly activities. Recently, we went to Detroit Science Center and to the “Famous” Lafayette Coney Island. We passed by the new Comerica Park on the way there.                    Mark A.
