The Fairweather Lodge Programs follow the philosophy of Dr. George W. Fairweather. The Fairweather philosophy embraces the concept of empowering those individuals to whom services are provided. It places strong emphasis on the individuals themselves and the strength of the problem solving support group. Through this supportive group process, individuals can gain control of their daily lives by taking on leadership and decision making roles. The group is assisted by a program coordinator who acts as a consultant/facilitator. Interwoven in the Fairweather philosophy is the consumer run business. Consumers in the Lodge programs own and run their own company using the same problem solving support group process. The Lodge business for Premier and Kinsel is Ever-Glo Janitorial Service, Inc. This company was incorporated in 1986 and currently contracts with multiple facilities for janitorial services.

Fairweather Lodge programs are found in many different states. There is an alliance of Lodge programs called the Coalition for Community Living, which serves as a support group. Lodge programs have been in existence since the 1960's.

Program Principles:

bullet Consumers must have a stake in the system
bullet The program must provide consumers as much autonomy as possible
bullet Options for promotion and rising to a higher status must be provided
bullet Values of the larger society should be reflected
bullet The program must reflect the characteristics of the environment in which it exists
bullet Tolerance of harmless individual idiosyncrasies must be established
bullet Feedback must be provided on the problem-solving abilities of the consumers
bullet Open entry and exit for consumers must be provided
bullet Both rehabilitative and work norms should be supported
bullet Program should not be dependent on good will of the community in which it exists
bullet An ongoing method to handle daily living problems shall be implemented
